Determined, precise almost maniacal in the development of his collection, Joey McMakin an american designer has already entered the agenda of the most notorious editors in fashion and the hearts of many who appreciate his passionate attention to detail.
The secret is his kind nature, quietly spoken, but his talent speaks volumes. A creative genius, a perfectionist and professional to the core. His love for shoes began when he was a teenager. ”I would visit markets and old stores searching for shoe. I had over 450” explains McMakin. In fact his collection of vintage shoes from the 1920’s, 40’s and 50’s emblems that represent elegance, ignited his passion of which has grown over the years. Masterpieces, both women’s and men’s styles that reflect research and refinement.
“These are the era’s that have influenced me the most…. In fact my passion became my profession”.
The creations of Dior, YSL and Chanel at those times were not simple and have influenced a great deal. Art, graphics and architecture are the key elements for production of the accessories that are followed step by step only this process merits the name McMakin.
“I don’t believe in mass production” proclaims McMakin, “I prefer to create a few pieces, but exceptional ”
The same philosophy is applied for the distribution. For the future a plan to open 3 or 4 boutiques very selective and that will echo the McMakin image. “Today I have the opportunity to expand my collection, as well as shoes, bags and accessories. It would be an important opportunity that I will put into effect only if I can follow the same process as I do with the shoes”.
Joey McMakin goes against the trends and follows his instinct, he examines the architecture of his creations constantly, shortening the toe, arching the heel all perfectly studied to construct a clean, perfect geometric shape, with great emphasis on the arch of the foot, a particular detail that will remain a Signature.
The past collaborations with Stéphane Kélian and Polo Ralph Lauren are part of an excellent background. Today McMakin designs freelance for René Caovilla.

A question of Style. The Spring and Summer Collection 2007 is more than just a footwear selection, Joey McMakin manifests his creativity with contemporary elegance.
A new "Style" language, modern and feminine, inspired by the spirit of the 1940's and 50's.
"This Season", explains the designer, " I tried to inject a positive feeling after a rigid fall/winter", shapes, colours and materials were entwined together to illuminate and create a bright atmosphere; each style breathes simplicity. Classic colours mixed together with new shades and intricate materials give birth to accessories that accentuate sensuality.
With a background of excellence, Mr.McMakin is a true artist, each piece reflects the era and comes alive with materials and colours that are delicately chosen. The precise workmanship, the attention to every detail, the passion and the eye for luxury are just a few words to describe this mastermind of style.
Clean shapes, geometrical forms, sandals and shoes with closed toes are shortened and limited in order to rievocate the Hollywood stars from the 50's, but yet with a modern, McMakin twist. Each item made prescious with rationalised heels, sensual without being extreme; each style has a luxurious shape that is true architecture, a fresh new concept in the world of accessories.
Colour is the soul of the collection, a caleidascope of tonalities, neutrals and vivacious shades all similar are deliciously blended together to give life to innovative bicolours. La scarpa da donna come oggetto con un alto contenuto estetico, analogamente a una scultura o un’opera di architettura – questo è l’approccio di Joey McMakin alla progettazione delle proprie collezioni. Per questo egli considera “sculture” le scarpe che disegna, dove non c’è un solo dettaglio che non venga pensato e sentito. Joey arriva alla creazione delle calzature dall’arte e dall’amore per le “cose belle” in generale. Dopo il diploma in pittura e disegno a Illinois negli USA, decide di allargare il proprio orizzonte creativo e parte per Parigi, dove inizia a disegnare le scarpe, trasformando la propria passione di collezionista delle calzature vintage in una professione. La sua collezione di scarpe conta circa 200 paia e, prima o poi, finirà a par parte di qualche museo.

Intervista, raccolta da Liuba Popova nel novembre 2006:

L.P.: Come e quando ha iniziato a collezionare scarpe? Quali sono i suoi “pezzi” preferiti?

J.McM.: Non so nemmeno io perché iniziai a raccogliere le scarpe vintage. Quando ho cominciato, all’età di circa 16 anni, vintage non era ancora di moda e questo mi ha permesso di acquistare per pochi spiccioli scarpe bellissime nei mercatini e nei negozi di “second hand”. Collezionavo ciò che mi colpiva per la sua bellezza, per la sua forma architettonica, soprattutto le scarpe da donna degli anni 1950. Infatti, il pezzo preferito della mia collezione è un paio di scarpe di raso rosa degli anni ’50, di cui ammiro la perfezione fin nei minimi dettagli.

L.P.: Lei aveva detto una volta che il design delle scarpe richiede precisione, in quanto “ogni millimetro di troppo può trasformare estasi in agonia”. Come si raggiunge il giusto equilibrio tra la bellezza e il comfort?

J.McM.: La mia ricerca nella costruzione della scarpa si concentra soprattutto sui tacchi, dai quali dipende tutto l’equilibrio “architettonico” della scarpa, la sua silhouette nello spazio. Ciò non significa spingerli fino ad un’altezza estrema. E’ vero che la teatralizzazione sempre maggiore delle sfilate di moda ha portato a elevare i tacchi fino ad altezze esagerate mai viste prima, ma non si può vivere, viaggiare e lavorare indossandoli ogni giorno. Perciò in ogni mia collezione, composta di circa 30 modelli, io propongo varie forme, altezze e spessori dei tacchi, senza per questo sacrificare l’estetica delle proporzioni della scarpa.

Le scarpe di Joey McMakin sono piacevoli da portare, ma anche da ammirare come oggetti di design raffinato: in esse si combinano nuances sofisticate dei colori con insoliti accostamenti dei materiali ricercati, pelle di pesce con vernice e cordoncini si seta, vernice con asole rifinite in raso di seta, fibbie di galalite e smaltate. Tutto è fatto con molto amore, lo stesso amore che spinse anni fa il ragazzino Joey a cercare la scarpetta di cristallo della Cenerentola nelle botteghe dei robivecchi e antiquari.

New fabrications re new the “Classic Cuff” style, always present in the collection a distinct piece due to the famous button’s that cover the toes and the strong heels!! Bright, intense colours are used to enlighten this season’s simple outfits and illuminate the sombre greys and neutrals. The “Fiona” Sandal another best seller of the maison, maintains it’s well defined shape with its slim heel that enhances the silhouette. The original mixture of colours, oranges and chromes, greens and okra’s are effortlessly blended together to frame the foot.
For the first time we have the Low heels: the first being the “Ballet” shoe. Comfort and poise, with a lacquered bow and a strap at the ankle. The intricate contrast colours make it a “MUST HAVE” for this season.
The second is the “moccasin” in lacquered leathers complete with a metallic buckle! Two new entries that added a more “Retro” feel and allowed the designer to play with other
shapes. Joey also introduced boots this Season, the unforgettable style of the creator is evident, the sensuality that covers the leg, sabot with skyscraper heels and nude ankles.
Every season Joey McMakin produces 300 pairs exclusively, real objects of desire.
The most notorious boutiques globally could not resist. In fact today you can find his creations at the following stores just to name a few: Vierre, La Vetrina di Beryl in Milan, Maria Luisa in Paris and Joyce Hong Kong.
