TREND ALERT

Fall Fashion for 07/08

Taking inspiration from London’s Autumn/winter fashion week, which was the strongest yet, I will take you through what’s ‘in’ for 07/08. But it’s still hot I hear you reply! Yes, I know but it never hurts to be ahead of the trends. I will be discussing clothes, accessories, hair, beauty and even menswear, so there will be no more excuses for scruffy London boys.
The key items were high waists on skirts and trousers, reaching to just below the bust, while skinny belts were seen on everything from dresses to cardies Talking of which oversized cardigans and v-necks in charcoals, greys, and blacks were shown by Nicole Farhi, and Marc Jacobs. Don’t throw out your leggings and tights just yet – the majority of the designers were also showing their take on these.
There was a very feminine and lady-like feel to most collections, so look out for cropped trousers with turn ups, puffed sleeves and blouses with pussycat bows at the neck a la Margaret Thatcher. You can also include wide-legged tailoring, tiny tweed shorts and lots of itchy mohair to this look.
Bags will be bigger (great more visits to my chiropractor) and platforms will be higher (I’m already falling over in this seasons style). Lastly it’s all about metallics, Paul Costelloe mixed his gold lurex tights, gold shoes with black tunics, so this season bring out your inner magpie.

The ‘IT’ item.

Yes it is still the dress, and for those of you who still haven’t got to grips with the different styles (shame on you), I will give you a helping hand. The only problem with having so many choices, it is easy to make a major fashion faux pas. Should you go for the sack, trapeze or bubble?. It is hard to know what type of dress will suit you., so I am going to break it down, and hopefully you will join me on my love affair with ‘THE DRESS’.

The A-line This dress creates a sharp and chic look. It is less dramatic than the Trapeze dress, but still has a triangular silhouette. The shoulders are narrow, and the top half is slim, finishing with a stiff, flared hem, creating a shape similar to a capital A. Pair with flat pumps or boots, and take through to evening by adding sleek, ‘boxy’ accessories.

The Baby Doll Inspired by the 1950’s short-lace trimmed nightwear, it is a very feminine style. The Baby Doll is generally an empire line, with a thigh skimming hem. This style suits the young and petite and can be worn over skinny pants for a more modest look. You need to be careful with this style as I am getting really fed up with people asking me when I am due.

The Bubble - It is similar to the sack dress, but makes more of a statement. The dress balloons slightly out at the hem and has become a key evening look for this season. To pull off this look, you need to be tall or wear very high heels. For a look that will suit everyone make sure the dress falls just below the knee, rather than the cropped style.

The Sack - This style is oval in shape. It is voluminous around the waist and hip (perfect for my protruding tummy), and tapers above the knee. This is THE shape of the season, so there is no excuse for not running out now and getting your very own sack dress. To wear, just add heels. Jackets should be slim across the shoulders.

The Trapeze - Think Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby. You can tell a Trapeze dress by its narrow shoulders and a wide expanse of fabric at the hem. It has two parallel lines at the neck and hem, and two angular seams at the sides. This look suits lithe, small chested figures best , as the voluminous tent shape will only make your body appear larger.

The Tunic- This style is versatile and flattering. It is a loose fitting dress and can be worn on its own, belted at the waist or layered over pants. For evening, dress up your tunics with thick tights and heels.

Let’s Make up

The only look I am not looking forward to is bushy eye brows, think Brook Shields and you get the picture. Monochrome is big news, try a slick of black varnish or emulate Scarlette Johansson with white, (just make sure it is pearlised enough to prevent talons looking Tipp-exed).
Make is nude, nude, nude, so boring! Though I do like the sixties inspired eyes. Eyeliner, eye shadow, even false eyelashes are huge this winter. You will see everything from the Audrey Heyburn ‘50’s flick to the classic ‘80s full on eyeliner. It should be kept clean and slightly softened, but not smudged, as rock chic smoky eyes were nowhere to be seen on this season’s catwalks.

Hair Flair

Hairstyles varied from completely big and absolutely mad-sized coiffures to bobbed styles and wigs in crazy colours. Some of the models even sported simple pony tails, reminiscent of 90s minimalism. Paul Costelloe featured big hair, very ‘Barbarella‘. Manish Arora uses bright red wigs in bob cuts, which concludes that the ‘pob’ will still be in, dammit.

It’s a mans thing

Sorry guys the skinny jeans are still around, this seasons colours are dark navy or stone washed grey. Stay clear if you are heavy in the thigh department. Pointed shoes and trainers are everywhere, but if your feet are on the large side, the ski look is not advised. Canvas deck shoes (think Vans) are also on the footwear list and boots are back. It's about time!
Plain Cuban-heeled boots in leather or suede look best vintage and dirty, same goes for motorcycle boots. Equestrian style riding boots look great over slim trousers or jeans and more tailored, gentlemanly styling.

IS THE FASHION WORLD WEARING THIN?

The New York and London Fashion Week were both over shadowed by the size 0 debate. To add even more fuel to the fire, a teenage model whose sister starved herself to death has also died of suspected anorexia. Eliana Ramos, 18, collapsed six months after her sister Luisel had a heart attack during a fashion show and triggered an international debate over the use of size zero models on the catwalks.
So what are the fashion councils doing about this? New York and London are not following the lead of Milan and Madrid, who have demanded models have a minimum body mass of 18, or pass a medical, but they have made some progressive recommendations. All models have to be over the age of 16 and healthy looking. New York in particular will be offering advice on nutrition and eating disorders, and supplying healthy food back stage at the shows. Alcohol will also be banned, replaced with water and nourishing drinks.
It is well known that designers like to use very thin models as they believe clothes hang off them better, but is this the ideal body shape? Is it what the general public really aspire to? A recent U.S survey by the University of Texas has confirmed that men prefer women with an hour glass figure. To put it bluntly, they say they ‘like a little something to grab hold of.’
When taking a look at which celebrity most woman wish to look like, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez come out top. These are not stick thin women. They have curves and are proud of them. Even Gwyneth Paltrow who is famous for her willowy frame has stated she would prefer the body of Beyonce. J-Lo is renowned for asking, “ Does my bum look big in this”. The reply she craves is ‘yes’, and it has become her most famous asset. She set the trend for curves in 1997 when she hit the big time with the film Selena. She was voted FHM’s sexiest woman two years in a row, by men and women.
Many women would prefer magazines and fashion houses to promote curvier women like this, but it doesn’t seem to be happening. Ex Super model Tyra Banks has just been criticised by the media for putting on weight since she retired from modelling. The presenter of America’s Next Top model now weighs 11st 5lb, which is perfectly healthy for her 5ft 10in frame. Critics have gone as far as calling her ‘America’s top waddle’. Tyra has hit back in an interview with US People magazine. ‘I get mail from girls who say, “I look up to you, you’re not as skinny as everyone else. I think you’re beautiful,”’ she said. ‘So when they say my body is “ugly” and “disgusting,” what does that make those girls feel?” So how does she feel about herself now that she has put on weight, ‘I still feel hot’ says Tyra. This is the kind of role model the world needs to see more of.
Things are looking up though. The show making the biggest impact on the fashion world at the moment is Ugly Betty. The show features shapely Latino women alongside stick thin models. The main character Betty, is someone that young girls can look up to. She is succeeding in a world that doesn’t want her to fit in. It shows impressionable teenagers that you can have curves and be different, yet still be fabulous. She is a much better role model, than the likes of the emaciated Nicole Ritchie, another teen idol. Designers are even bringing out Ugly Betty ranges to cater for the demand. After each episode abctvstore.com puts up selected pieces worn by characters in the show. This hasn’t been seen since Sex In The City.
Another positive in the world of media, is the increase of urban magazines. Their covers rarely feature skinny women, and tend to promote voluptuous females. With these on the rise, maybe one day they will influence the likes of Vogue to change their ideas of what is the perfect body.
We can’t completely blame the fashion industry for the worlds’ obsession with being thin. It is something that we need to change ourselves. To make a woman’s day you don’t need to tell her she is beautiful, she will be much happier if you tell her she looks like she has lost weight. It is sad that our nations have turned so body conscious, but steps are being taken in the right direction. Remember what ever size or shape you are, ‘you are beautiful.’.

Leggings, can you handle it?

There back! This item of clothing has the power to make grown women cry, but fear not, I promise this time will be different. Anyone can wear them. It’s not just for the under thirties . The trend was resurrected by Lindsay Lohan, (we have her stylist Rachel Zoe to thank for this). What makes the style wearable is the fact you have to team them with thigh length tops. This banishes muffin tops (where your flesh hangs over your waist band), lumps and bumps and the dreaded camel toe (fashionista’s name for a fashion faux pas caused by women wearing too snug pants).
So how do you wear them? Leggings can be worn in three lengths, ankle, calf and below the knee. Black suits everyone and is the most flattering. They should be of good quality, as cheap leggings are very unforgiving. Baggy knees and saggy bums are not expectable. You should team them with a long top of your choice. This can be a dress, jumper, shift, baggy t-shirt vest or a slinky evening top. Just make sure it completely covers your crotch. Shoes should be round toed, platform or sandals for smart, ballet pumps for casual. Accessorise with belts for an hourglass figure.
How long this trend will last is anyone’s guess, but enjoy this eighties throw back while you still can.

IT’S A WOMANS WORLD.

The ever evolving world of photography has changed dramatically over the years . What was once a predominantly male industry, has now accepted women as equal. Photographers such as Annie Leibowitz, Mary Ellen Mark and Ellen von Unwerth have led the way. Female photographers are still having to deal with sexist treatment from certain types in this business, but it is ever decreasing. There are more women in the advertising field now than ever, and the result of this is female photographers are getting bigger breaks. Woman are having such an impact on the industry, that they even affect the cameras that are being produced. Cameras are becoming lighter and easy to carry, in order to cater for the expanding female market. For example medium format cameras are not practical due to the weight. Women prefer 35 mm or digital.
For anyone with a stereotypical view of women photographers taking pictures of cute puppy dogs and pretty flowers, you should take a look at these three young and edgy photographers.
Firstly, I would like to introduce you to Heather Drake. She is only 25, but is already taking the photography world by storm. Heather is originally from Maryland, but shoots predominantly in New York.
Originally a model, she found her photographic talent by accident. While on a break from a modelling shoot, she asked the photographer if she could take a few pictures. To everyones surprise the shots were of a high standard. Jokingly, Heather asked the photographer if she could buy her camera (which was a Nikon d100), the answer was yes. A talented photographer had just been born. Eager to learn more she called on an old contact, Damon Hall Booth, who taught her all the basics, whilst she practised her style on local girls from her neighbourhood.
Six months on and Heather sent her work to agencies, the first to reply was Ford. This, of course, meant everyone else followed their lead. She could not believe how far she had come in such a short time.
Heather Drakes style is fresh and edgy, and her beauty images are breathtaking. Her enthusiasm for fashion can be seen throughout her work. She shoots regularly for agencies and has had two publications so far. Heather has also started to break into the hip hop and celebrity end of the market, and loves to photograph anyone who has true talent. Vogue watch this space.

Heather, who inspires you?

I find inspiration in so many places. I am inspired by all the people around me, who love their job, just as I do. If you are talking photographically, Gavin O’Neill, Roberto Aguilar, Patrick Demarchelier, Steven Meisel, David LaChapelle, Sarah Silver and many more.

What was your favourite shoot and why?

All my shoots have been great experiences and I have learned and grown from them all. Thanks to all who have contributed!

Do you shoot in film or digital, please explain your choice?

There is quality in both, but I was born into digital. I use a Canon 30 D

Would you say you are easy to work with?

Absolutely, I pride myself in being very laid back and listening to the clients ideas.

Do you prefer to shoot location or studio, and describe why?

Location, I think natural lighting is the best. Real people are always in natural light and I think this is where they are more natural and more beautiful.

Have you fulfilled all your photographic ambitions?

No way! There is so much more that I wish to accomplish. My ultimate goal is to shoot the cover of Vogue.

Who dead or alive would you like to shoot?

Gemma Ward, Gisele Bundchen. or Beyonce , of course this list could go on all day.

Is it hard to be a female photographer in a predominately male industry?

No, I really think it makes it easier in some aspects. Women and men feel more comfortable with me because I am a woman.. I think right now what makes it harder is my age. People who have been in the business a long time tend to not take younger talent seriously. They will soon see that Heather Drake is going places. Look out world here I come. Give me another 5 years, I will be at the top.

Do you have any advice for aspiring female photographers?

Reach for your goals, no matter how hard it may seem, and don’t let anyone try to stop you. . Always study the work of the most successful photographers . Try to imitate them. Never aspire to be less than the best. Never except your second best.

What would you like to be remembered for?

My drive and unfailing love for what I do.

Hair today gone tomorrow

Last week, whilst in Spain, I was waiting at a cab rank and spotted a gorgeous young man. I, of course, inspected him from head to toe. Hair - perfect, clothes, Hugo Boss - perfect, Havana flip flops - perfect, and then I saw it! Hairy toes! My skin started to crawl. How could he have not noticed his Hobbit feet? I know it’s shallow, but this completely turned me off him. I hate unsightly body hair. It doesn’t look nice so GET RID OF IT.
I think my obsession started when I was around ten. My Nan had started to sprout long dark hairs from her chin. I was convinced she was one of Roald Dahl’s witches. Do you get to a certain age and stop caring? For those of you who are not sure if you have fallen into this awful category, I have compiled a list of the do’s and don’ts of body and facial hair.
If you are blonde, arms, stomachs and backs can be left alone. Women, you should remove all leg hair, including toes, and keep your bikini line trimmed. As long as it doesn’t come outside of your smallest panties it’s fine. After that, you can choose which ever style you prefer. I opt for the Brazilian, which is a small strip. Underarms are always clean, just because Julia Roberts likes to be different, doesn’t mean you should. If you are on the dark side, life tends to be a bit harder for you. My furry friends also have to wax their stomachs, backs, arms, lips, chins, nostrils and faces. Asian woman seem to suffer the worst from hirsute. The good news is the more you wax the thinner the regrowth. You should always check with your doctor that the problem isn’t hormone related. If it is, your doctor may be able to prescribe something like the Pill Dianette to balance your hormones and reduce hair growth. Always speak to your doctor first.
Now, for all you man beasts out there. Hairy backs are a big no no. My ex boyfriend broke the blonde rule. He wasn’t particularly hairy, but he had sporadic, long, black hairs all over his back. It had to go. He could have been in the film The Fly. Chest hair is your preference. I personally like clean shaven. Remember Jon Bon Jovi in the Calvin Klein campaign? He was so much sexier with out the rock and roll hairy chest.
Ears and noses must be trimmed and eyebrows left alone unless it a mono brow. If you have been blessed with one of these, just tweeze out the hairs in the middle, until you end up with two eyebrows. As for the male nether regions, the back, crack and sack wax has tremendously increased in popularity over the past years, with many thanks to David Beckham. I know it is not pleasant having to be on all fours for this procedure, but believe me, your girlfriend will thank you for it.
So now you know what to remove, but how do you do it? The best method is waxing. It should be done professionally to save accidents. My D.I.Y jobs have ended up in bruising, cuts and hours of picking tiny bits of wax off my body. Ask friends to recommend a good therapist. Threading is an ancient Indian art and removes the hair with a piece of cotton, which is wrapped around the hairs and gently pulled. This is fabulous for shaping eyebrows and removing all facial hair. If you are in a rush, razors or hair removal creams are a good option. Exfoliate first, as this helps reduce ingrown hairs. To stop the redness, make sure either you or your therapist puts on a soothing cream afterwards. If you don’t do this, believe me when I tell you it is very obvious what you have had done. After one certain salon visit I bumped into an ex, who with a big grin said, “I didn’t know you waxed your lip”.
So once you are hair free and smooth as a babies bottom, you will see how good it looks and feels. As I say,
